Ramayana Masam (Malayalam: രാമായണം മാസം) is an important observance in the state of Kerala. It is observed in the month of ‘Karkidakam’. The annual ‘Ramayana Month’ or Ramayana Masam started in Kerala Today and will continue till August 16th, one month in Total.
Special Ramayana Patha, recital and classes will be held in major temples in Kerala as part of the beginning of the month. Ramayana is recited in all Lord Vishnu temples in Kerala during this period.
It is a decade-old tradition that devotees, especially elders, recite “Adhyatma Ramayana” authored by medieval devotional poet Thunchath Ramanujan Ezhuthachan, in the next one month to mark the period. What is Ramayana Masam or Month in Kerala
The Karkadakam month (July – August), ‘Karkkidakam’, the last month in the Malayalam almanac, in the Malayalam Calendar is observed as the Ramayana Masam in Kerala. “Masam” means month in Malayalam. During this month, the epic Ramayana is recited in homes and temples.
In 2017, the Ramayana Masam is from July 17th to August 16th. The reading of epic Ramayana begins on the first day of the month and it will be completed on the last day of the month.
Spiritual classes and discourses on Ramayana by experts would be conducted in various temples, including at the famed Sree Krishna Temple in Guruvayur till the end of the ‘karkkidakam’ month.The ritualistic ‘Anayoottu’, a feeding ceremony of elephants, at Sree Vadakkunnathan Temple in Thrissur also used to fall on the first day of ‘karkkidakam’.A number of elephants were fed with jaggery, ghee, rice, coconut, sugarcane, medicinal herbs and so on at the grand old temple today as part of the feast, temple sources said.
